Founded in 2008, the Chicago International Movies & Music Festival (CIMMfest) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization dedicated to exploring the relationship between music, movies, and visual media in all its forms. Bringing together films and filmmakers, music and musicians, art and artists, industry and audiences from around the world, CIMMfest celebrates creativity and discourse that showcase the power of collaboration. In addition to presenting year-round film screenings, concerts, and conversations, as well as the Spring Fling Thing minifest, the Chicago International Movies & Music Festival organization produces one of Chicago’s most highly anticipated and largest cultural events of the year, “CIMMfest” (November 9-12), a multimedia event that features film premieres and a selection of classic films, live concerts, live scored films, experiments in sound and sight, and a dynamic professional industry conference, “CIMMcon”.
CIMMstory: The Chicago International Movies & Music Festival started out as a four-day showcase of outstanding films, energetic concerts, visually stunning VJ/DJ sets, lively Q&A’s, daring live score performances, industry panels and presentations… anything to show just what movies and music meant to each other. Each Spring since 2008, filmmakers, musicians, and their passionate fans alike, have descended upon Wicker Park and Logan Square, two of Chicago’s most eclectic, vibrant neighborhoods, to experience films by day and live music by night, at theaters, galleries, bars, concert spaces, and some of the city’s most storied venues. The films have come from all countries and cultures, from documentaries to fiction, concert films to shorts and music videos. They have to be about music and/or use music in a creative, integral way. The live performances are inspired by film or feature visual accompaniment and cover every imaginable style.
In 2013, CIMMfest expanded its music section to include more than fifty bands, twenty venues and a footprint along Milwaukee Avenue that stretches nearly two miles. CIMMcon also made it’s debut in 2013, bringing together nearly sixty innovators, tastemakers, industry leaders and more in a series of panels exploring everything from the “State of the Recording Industry” to how to “Kickstart Your Film”.
CIMMfest was imagined and brought to life by musician Josh Chicoine (Cloudbirds, The M’s) and filmmakers Ilko Davidov and Carmine Cervi (BulletProof Film). No one knew what they were getting into at the start, but hundreds of films, concerts, tens of thousands of attendees and countless incredible experiences later, CIMMfest has earned its place as a one-of-a-kind Chicago fixture.
CIMMfest is made possible by its generous sponsors, by its fans, and most importantly, by its many dedicated volunteers. Join us in this continuing adventure!
